B6 HONOLULU ADVERTISER Nov. 7, 1363 HARLAND SVARE IS SUCCESSOR Waterfield Resigns As Ranis 9 The new coach made an immediate change, taking ex-Detroit Lions star Jim David off his job as defensive backfield coach and shifting him to talent scouting. Svare said he would have defensive veterans Les Rich-tcr and Lindon Crow function as player-coaches with Rich-ter working with the line and Crow with the defensive bscks Waterfield said in announcing his resignation he felt his action would "be best for all concerned under the circumstances." The Rams have won only one of eight games played this season. They lost Sunday to the Detroit Lions, 12-3. By ART SPANDER LOS ANGELES (UPK Bob Waterfield resigned as head coach of the Los Angeles Rams yesterday despite the pleadings of the club for him to remain, general manager Elroy Hirsch said last night.

Hirsch told a press conference that he and Waterfield conferred for several hours over "about 30 cups of coffee" but the general manager said he was unable to convince the coach he should finish out the season. "He felt that the team would get a spark or lift if he quit," Hirsch said. "I finally accepted his resignation." HIRSCH REVEALED he then named defensive coach Harland Svare as Waterfield's replacement because the general manager felt "the responsibility of head coach should be on one man." The general manager disclosed he conferred with (he Ram owners who havt been in a squabble over control of the club before tiaking his decision to turn the head coach's job over Svare. "We naturally regret the resignation of Waterfield," a statement from the owners said. "He has been a great asset to the team and we hae a tremendous respect for him.

We wish Svare the best of luck." Hirsch said that while Svare's appointment was only for the balance of the season, the former New York Giants star would be a leading candidate for appointment on a permanent basis if the Rams snapped out of their losing slump. SVARE, WHO WAS present at the press conference, thanked Hirsch for his confidence and then said he hoped he would be able to make something out of the balance of the season. "I have complete faith in Hampton Pool as our offensive coach," Svare added. The shooting of Allan Bir-ties, Gene Yarbrough and Norman Ching and the floor work of Norman Deponte paced the Rainbow triumph.

The Rainbows jumped off to a 43-18 first half advantage on the hot shooting of Birtles and Yarbrough. COACH AL SAAKE'S collegians grabbed a 5-2 lead at the outset, increased it to 11-3 and then ran away to open a 25-point gap at intermission. SubPac came to within four points of catching the Rainbows, 16-12, midway in the first half but Birtles and Yarbrough were too hot to handle. BUT SUBPAC fought back and narrowed the margin to 67-53 with 2:30 left in the game and then closed out by scoring the last nine points in a row after UH managed just one.

Birtles and Yarbrough were held to two points each in the second half but they wound up with high scoring honors with 18 and 14, respectively. Birtles fouled out in the last six minutes of the game. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Coach Jimmy Asato's collegians will be seeking their fifth win in six games and third straight against the last of the AAH clubs.

THE Rainbows face their stiffest competition against the Surfers who have been bolstered by several standouts from the Windward Koolau Chiefs. Most of them prepped at Kahuku High School. Hawaii, however, rates the edge over the Surfers because of freshman quarterback Melvin Wise the running of Benjamin Ron-quilie and a solid front wall spearheaded by co-captains Larry Price and Milton Hiroliata who have been outstanding in the Rainbows' five games.
