Spencecliff, purchased last summer by Nittaku Enterprise Co. Ltd. of Tokyo, reached agreement on the sale with owner Tony Canlis last week and will assume ownership March 1. The price wasn't disclosed.

Eiji Nishimura, Spencecliff's vice chairman, said, "My idea is to make as little change as possible." The restaurant, which was founded in 1947 and moved to its current location seven years later, "is too much of an institution to change," he said. Canlis, son of founder N. obituaries Adm. Jack Darby, sub force chief Rear Adm. Jack N.

Darby, commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, died Jan. 19, 1987, at his quarters in Makalapa of an apparent heart attack. He was 50. Darby was born in Batesville, Texas, and was a graduate of the University of Colorado.

Prior to taking over as commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, he was deputy for politico military affairs with the command and policy directorate of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington. Prior to that he was commandant of midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy. He also commanded USS Thomas Jefferson and the USS Benjamin Franklin, both polaris ballistic missile submarines.

He was a recipient of the Defense Distinguished Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals and three Legion of Merit awards. Adm. J.A. Lyons commander-in-chief, Pacific Fleet, said last night that "Jack Darby was a magnificent leader and a true warrior who made great contributions to the submarine force and the war- fighting capabilities of the Pacific Fleet. He will be missed by all who served with him.

His death is a tragedy, a loss not only to the Navy but to our country." Darby is survived by his wife, Bobbie, and three children, Dana Edwards, Jeffrey Darby and Gerald Darby. The children live on the Mainland. Services are pending. AHN Soo Il Ahn, 24, of 620 Sheridan died Jan. 19, 1987.

Survived by Peter Canlis, who died in 1977, will 1 leave the restaurant and has "no immediate plans to go back into the restaurant business," he said. Nishimura said he set out to soon after Nittaku Enterprise, Spencecliff purchased chain the last 46- July. The Canlis purchase is only part of a "long-term, multimillion-dollar expansion plan," he said. Spencecliff plans to upgrade all of the chain's 24 restaurants, three of which are on Maui. Among near-term projects 1 is installation of two restaurants at the existing Ranch House in Aina Haina, he said.
