Norbie Mendes, former By MARTYN CHASE For Art Gallon, this is old home week. Gallon, personable basketball coach for the University of California at Santa Barbara, is here with his Gauchos for a three-game series which opens tonight against the University of Hawaii (1-2) at Klum Gym, 8 p.m. For five years from 1947 until 1951, Gallon coached the Rainbows, leading them to some of their best seasons ever. All told, Gallon lived in the Islands for over 10 years, coaching at Kamehameha, Iolani and Mid-Pacific before going to the University. Gallon's current team is the tallest in Santa Barbara history averaging 6-5 in height, but it's also a young club with only two seniors on the 12-man traveling roster.

"We've got the best potential we've ever had at Santa Barbara," Gallon said following a workout last night at Klum. "But we're still green and I just hope we can do a respectable job." So far, the Gauchos have posted a 2-2 record, defeating crosstown rival West-mont and Whittier but losing to San Jose State and Loyola of Los Angeles. Starting for Santa Barbara tonight will be 6-5 Gary Davis and 6-6 Howie Sundberg at forwards; 6-8 John Conroy at center; and 6-2 Jimmy Larsen and 6-1 Gary Gaskill at guards. Also slated for plenty of action are a pair of promising sophomores, 6-9 Steve Fruchey at center and 6-3 Tommy Lee at guard, 'ji Others making the trip are 6-6 center Larry Trick, 6-5 Orville Elkins, 6-3 Gary fciiffiimmmrwunn fOiiti- rmSji tfn edcttM iwirnnilt rumi'mi i 's-twrnirmafM 1 1 Iffl tflfllUjllPf I John Mackey, Syracuse End Syracuse's Star End to Play Here Punahou star has been pro- Santa Barbara's Coach Art Gallon, formerly of Ha-moted from the junior var- sity and will see action at wan, and his team captain Gary Davis.
