Single file, we ventured cautiously at first, then recklessly when we thought there was nothing to be afraid of. SUDDENLY, I was aware of wind howling through the trees, a lonesome sound. Then I realized there were no trees; it was impossible for wind to whistle through non-existent trees. I heard heavy footsteps, the beating of drums, the murmur of voices. To my horror, I found I was alone on the grassy plain.

My relatives had de-. serted me; their retreating figures were disappearing in a cloud of dust. My feet wouldn't move. I stood rooted to the ground. While I froze and my voice ailed me, the drums drummed louder and the sound of marching feet was practically on me.

I heard again the murmur of voices that had become loud chants. Suddenly, without warning, I was shoved rudely off the path into the high grass, and I heard a name. To do so would be to invite a spirit from out of the night to participate in some prank, with the whistler its victim. No playing, no eating, no activities enjoyed during the day were permitted after twilight. At night, those privileges belonged to the souls who restlessly prowled about. ALL BUSINESS transactions must be completed before twilight. Any business com'pleted after that hour was subject to change and the participants enjoyed little or no success.

We were not permitted to roam at will across a grassy, meadow-like piece of land that was situated directly beim Kualua's property that led to the sea at Honoipu. When Kualua told us she was going to visit relatives, we were ecstatic. She would be gone long enough for us to venture into the kapu (forbidden) area. It was a quiet, late afternoon and there were about 10 of us. We skipped, raced, walked and ran down the short dirt road that led to By NAPUA STEVENS POIRE Special to The Advertiser Napua Stevens Poire, a native of the Big Island, spent her childhood vacations in Kohala at the rambling hilltop home of her great-great grand-aunt, Kaaoaolahilahiokeohokalole Kailikini, whom she called "Kualua." On one of these visits, Napua encountered the 'ka huaka'l ka po," the night marchers of Hawaii.

This is her story: On our arrival from Hilo Kualua started her welcome chant that sounded to our young, frightened ears not unlike a spooky Halloween ghost sound. It was a Ku-o, dirge-like and eerie. KUALUA chanted a tribute to those kindred dead whose mortal remains rested just a few steps from the house. She told them of our coming and asked that they join her in making us welcome. She chanted our geneology and our close family ties, she blessed us and thanked the spirits of her ancestors who helped to make our travel safe.

I regained my equilibrium and ran as fast as I could toward home and Kualua. I had no doubt that she knew where I had been, but she offered me refuge and said not a word. When my sobbing subsided. I asked Kualua the reason for the sounds of drums and chants and marching I had heard.

I told her of the rude shoving and asked her the identity of the name that was whispered to me. AT ME SOUND of the name "Kauhinuiakama," tears rolled down Kualua's leathery cheeks. She rocked me in her arms and cried softly, calling the name I'd given her. She told me I had walked into the path reserved for those who are permitted to roam the earth, those who are called the "night marchers." And, if not for the intercession of the person who shoved me aside, I might have been killed. His was a gesture of love and concern for a relative.

The authors of a paper on sensitivity training in industry presented at a recent AMA Occupational Health Congress, concur with the Council on the need for caution. "We are extremely cautious in recommending the use of sensitivity train- incr in industry," they stat- ed.

They remarked, in their opinion, the goal of sensitivity training to reduce unproductive defenses could be accomplished with greater safety and efficiency by another method. They suggested changing the system in which an individual worked in such a way that sensitivity, efficiency, and good communication were rewarded. one of a kind from Zales 1.77 cts of diamonds set in platinum $1995 See Your Nearest ZAP IE.s JEWELERS 1045 Bishop Street Koholo Bailor: Shopping Center Hilo Mai 11 Beritals'4 004) 1. w-lo $1i43. Not unless you are well adjusted, emotionally stable and the group is led by a qualified professional and even then you may be in for trouble, the American Medical Association's Council on Mental Health cautioned. An article in one of the issues of the Journal of the American Medical Association, the Council emphasized sensitivity training is not a form of medical treatment.

It said that the "T-group" originated more than 20 years ago as an educational process to promote personal and social growth. It is not interchangeable with individual psychotherapy or group psychotherapy. THE COUNCIL reported on the occurrence of both psychological benefits and casualties from sensitivity training. Depression, psychosis and homosexual panic have resulted in some instances, it stated, as well as physical injuries. On the other hand, some psychiatrists have considered it a beneficial adjunct to psychotherapy.

To avoid becoming a "Tgroup" casualty, the Council advises you to be alert to several factors: Your own state of mental stability. The reputation of the organization sponsoring the "T-group." The qualifications of the group leader. The methods of prescreening participants.
